In the summer of 2021, NewTown Macon received $1 million from Macon-Bibb County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, which was matched by the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation, to establish a residential loan product that helps Macon-Bibb residents purchase, refinance, or rehabilitate properties and develop income-producing rental units. This new loan product helps residents invest successfully in real estate, build long-term wealth and produce rental housing at or below market rates, ultimately contributing to building resilient and beautiful neighborhoods.Â
Melanie Vaughn, a retired nurse, secured this new loan product to refinance the existing debt on her historic multifamily property. NewTown’s team worked with Melanie to secure the loan and consulted with her on pricing her rental rates, marketing her rental units available to lease, and implementing property management best practices. Melanie’s loan, paired with NewTown’s coaching services, will help her build more equity in her property and ensure she can maintain her iconic historic structure on College Street for years to come.
