JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Engagement is a full-time, salaried position responsible for fulfilling our mission by managing NewTown’s relationships with outside partners and the general public, primarily using placemaking and communications strategies.  This position plans and manages events, maintains Macon’s national Main Street accreditation, and leads marketing and public relations strategies. This employee is responsible for managing NewTown's brand and public image, overseeing the Main Street Macon volunteer board, and planning events that drive foot traffic to downtown Macon in support of local businesses. Ultimately, this position is charged with enhancing the everyday downtown experience.

The role works closely with the Digital Content Manager to execute marketing priorities and reports directly to the Chief of Staff and Vice President for Development, while collaborating with the President and CEO, staff, and volunteers.

The successful employee will be creative, well-organized, efficient and able to multi-task.  The employee will also be an excellent communicator and fluent in digital and traditional communication forms including graphic design. We are looking for a team member who brings professional skills in marketing, communications, placemaking, and public relations, who can strengthen all aspects of our mission, especially increasing general awareness about our activities and success.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations or related field
  • 5-7 years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, graphic design, event planning, non-profit organization, and/or comparable field
  • Commitment to downtown Macon and our mission
  • Experience serving or managing a volunteer board and/or committees, including agenda planning, volunteer engagement, and running an effective meeting
  • Superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing events
  • Advanced computer literacy, including:
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Proficient in website content management systems
    • Proficient in email marketing software
    • Proficient with content creation, social media messaging and advertising (primarily Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Flickr)
    • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
    • Proficient with Canva

 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Main Street America four-point approach
  • Experience collecting and organizing impact data and delivering reports
  • Familiarity with media relations, including preparing and coaching staff for interviews, press conferences, and other media engagements.
  • Ability to create an editorial content plan for multi-page publications, such as an Annual Report
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Proficiency in WordPress

 

Performance Measures:

  • Manage NewTown’s comprehensive brand following existing messaging platform and brand guidelines, including website maintenance, monthly mass email communications and consistent social media updates in coordination with the Digital Content Manager -25%
  • Maintain Macon’s Main Street Accreditation through monthly reporting, annual training, managing the Main Street board and corresponding committees, and completing annual assessments -15%
  • Plan and execute public events, press conferences, including coordination of the marketing of First Friday, and Tour of Progress, -15%
  • Coordinate NewTown’s relationship with the small business community in downtown Macon by staffing the Downtown Macon Community Association (DMCA) and nightlife committee and communicating useful information on digital and print channels -15%
  • Establish a good rapport with area media working to create continual positive public relations on NewTown, our projects and downtown in general, and produce press releases and media conferences when necessary -5%
  • Elevate NewTown’s national reputation by obtaining national awards, conference session presentations, and publications placement -5%
  • Manage NewTown’s data collection for tracking strategic plan goals and the growth of downtown -5%
  • Provide consulting advice to NewTown’s staff, Board and members on consistent marketing and branding throughout all the work produced by NewTown -5%
  • Manage NewTown Macon’s nationally recognized volunteer program, the Hype Team, in partnership with the Main Street board -5%
  • Other duties as assigned -5%
