SEUSS ON THE LOOSE RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN MACON

Macon, GA –The United Way of Central Georgia, the Middle Georgia Regional Library, and NewTown Macon are partnering to bring back Seuss on the Loose during March First Friday. The event will take place in the Third Street park median between Cherry Street and Poplar Street on Friday, March 4 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Seuss on the Loose is a celebration that promotes literacy and learning in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday during Read Across America Week. Community partners like United Way, Library Without Walls (WOW), and the Junior League of Macon will activate Third Street Park with Seuss-inspired crafts, games, and activities.

“United Way of Central Georgia is excited to partner with NewTown Macon and other community organizations to encourage families to come downtown and celebrate literacy,” said JoLee Henson, Community Relations Coordinator of United Way of Central Georgia. “A strong focus of UWCG is education. We have several campaigns, strategies, and initiatives that emphasize early literacy and childhood success. Additionally, we are excited to launch the community strategy, the Basics Central Georgia. The Basics focus on five, fun, simple, and powerful ways to help all children grow to be happy and smart. So, come downtown and bring your family as we celebrate literacy and Dr. Seuss’ birthday together!”

The Basics Central Georgia will host a book giveaway during the event and the Library Without Walls (WOW) will sign up families for library cards and have books to check out on site. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best character costume inspired by Dr. Seuss for the chance to win prizes.

“Meeting community members where they are and connecting them to our resources is very important to us,” said Emma Johnston, Community Engagement Coordinator of Library Without Walls (WOW), a program of the Middle Georgia Regional Library. “Our vision is for a literate, engaged, and enlightened Middle Georgia. Library WOW is here to do just that.”

Downtown Macon businesses will also participate by offering Seuss-themed specials and activities, like Green Eggs and Ham at Ocmulgee Brewpub and the Sam I Ham special at Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen. Families can go on a StoryWalk and read The Foot Book in the windows of downtown businesses and complete a Seuss scavenger hunt for the chance to win gift cards to downtown businesses.

“We are thrilled to help host this fun event for families in downtown Macon,” said Emily Hopkins, Director of Place at NewTown Macon. “The community identified the need for more family-friendly programming in the Macon Action Plan and this event attracts families from every corner of Macon-Bibb County to downtown Macon to enjoy our beautiful parks and interact with downtown businesses.”

Seuss on the Loose is free and open to the public. For more information and a complete list of activities, visit NewTown Macon’s Facebook page or newtownmacon.com.
